Developing new regenerative treatments for cardiovascular diseases, such as severe heart failure (dilated cardiomyopathy and fulminant myocarditis), where those treatments are most needed

Advanced cardiac failure is a major life-threatening illness worldwide, necessitating the development of effective treatment. It has been shown recently that prostaglandin/prostacyclin agonists have regenerative effects such as angiogenesis, anti-apoptosis, and anti-fibrosis on damaged cardiac tissue. In this project, synthetic prostaglandin/prostacyclin agonists will be manipulated as various drug-delivery systems (DDS), such as microspheres or nanospheres, to achieve targeted delivery of drugs to the cardiac tissue of interest, using a variety of animal models of advanced cardiac failure. The clinical application of these treatments is the final goal of this project.
